So it didn’t take long for me to embrace the commercialism of the holidays. I made a pumpkin pie and we bought a Christmas tree. Now the pumpkin pie? Well I didn’t have a pie plate so improvised with a skillet. I think this could be a big southern hit “Skillet Pie Cooking With HorseGirlTV” so Martha Stewart has nothing on me! Hah! Thnx for the idea Andrew! And yes, I make my own crusts. I used to have a bakery in Oregon back in the mid 90s!
Next it was on to the Christmas tree. I haven’t had a “real” Christmas tree since my small little one in Madrid in 2004 and Ex and I hadn’t ever had one together just opting for Norfolk pine or some tiny, tiny table model the past couple years. BUT!.. it was our first Christmas at the farm and we needed a hearty country tree. This is what we picked! Oh and we did try a couple of the local nurseries to support our local economy before heading to Lowes.

Selling my NEW Ovation and NEW Dehner Dress Riding Boots!
Okey! So some girls collect purses and shoes. I happen to collect the more fashionable yet function things like dress riding boots, saddles, bridles and the occasional fancy leather halter. But I have too many dress boots! Now some of you folks will say “Too many dress boots? Well that’s not possible.” but really there is too much of a good thing. Trying to decide which pairs to part with I am starting with my two brand NEW pairs, my Dehners (back zips) and my Ovations (side zips). I’ve just listed them on eBay so take a look when you have a sec and feel free to pass the links on.
The Dehners retail for $875.00! Yup, holy calfskin leather Batman! BUT… they are American made by a company with decades of experience in crafting quality boots for Americans and the world! I’m asking the Buy It Now on eBay at $249 but make me an offer!

The Ovations are a bit less steep retailing at $200 but still a great quality boot and the inside zips are pretty awesome. The Ovations do have a WAY low reserve. We’re talking over 65% off retail type reserve hint, hint! I didn’t take custom images of the Ovations as they are still wrapped up in their original tissue in the box but here’s a stock image.

Carrara Is Back!
She was a champ on the way over. A champ at Anky’s being around MAJOR construction the ENTIRE time with several cranes working, dogs, people, jackhammers, and you name it. She was great getting on and off the big and small horse boxes and lorreys and just a rockstar in general so to hear she loaded, flew and offloaded easy was great!
Here’s a picture from when she landed in JFK just before she was transported to the USDA quarantine. All horses coming to the states have to do a couple days with USDA before release. In Carrara’s case, she’ll need to do CEM for about 21 days once she’s released.
Picollo And Zita Re-unite!
I think Picollo is somewhat happy to have Zita back around. What do you think?
Yes. It’s December and Zita is panting laying in the sun through the window! I left cold, wet and blustery Erp for blustery yet warm and kinda wet NC! Awesome weather!
What Came First The Chicken Or The Egg
So I haven’t taken any pictures yet of the chickens that Brent sent me back down to NC with but he gave me 3 bantam hens for laying. After watching Food, Inc. I’m fairly down with any way I can take care of and harvest my food myself so this is pretty exciting. So no pictures of the hens but here’s a picture of 1 of the 3 eggs they have laid so far! No salt, no pepper and it was dang tasty!!
Driving Home
It was a long drive down to Brent’s in NoVA and I was tired but happy to be back stateside (which sorta surprised me!). I love the service areas in the upper east coast but being so early in the morning none of the shops were open until I hit Maryland. I walked through the door of the center and heard the lovely sound of frothing milk!!! Starbucks, the holidays and Peppermint Mocha stateside! Life is good!
The rest of the trip, I focused on getting to Brent’s, resting and getting home to our stable in NC!
The Flight Back & Accidental Manhattan Tour
It was a long, challenging and of so educational journey and we’re flying back now. I think a couple months solid 6 days a week lessons with journal notes everyday is enough to give anyone overload. Now it’s time to apply the education! Picollo and I fly back today while Carrara will stay in training for a couple more weeks then fly back. Because she was away from the states for more than 60 days she’ll have to do CEM (2ndary quarantine) for up to 21 days stateside. Luckily for me there’s a CEM facility in Southern Pines, NC which is about 3.5 hours from our stable.
Picollo is a seasoned international traveler! The last time (before our arrival) he was in AMS Schipol, he wasn’t paralyzed. This time he’s a great little cart doxy. I love that you can bring dogs into cafés here, even sitting them on the table and people don’t freak out! So awesome!
Because Carrara flew over biz class, we were supposed to be on standby for a biz class return meaning Picollo and I would get a biz class seat instead of riding in the “back of the bus” like we did coming over as groom for Carrara. Our first flight we got bumped off of so we had to find a hotel nearby and this flight we almost didn’t get on as it was 100% booked but 1 person didn’t show and we got his/her seat! Close call! We were in a middle seat in coach but we were on the plane and it was exciting to be going home!! We had to wait for everyone to de-plane as Picollo’s extra crate was in the back of the cabin so we just stood by the flight attendants. They started talking to him and (OF COURSE!) he started barking back. They just thought it was too funny that they would say “Bu-bye” to the passengers and Picollo would give a sharp “Bu-woof” to them. I’m not quite sure how the passengers felt about it but it was pretty cute for a while at least! Here’s Picollo at his “Bu-bark” location.
So because I was on standby, I didn’t want to book a flight that we’d miss nor a car hire that we’d be late for so I showed up at JFK with no solid plans on how to get to Gattis Manor in VA where my Jeep and horse box were. A bit of wandering and thinking with 2 LARGE rollers, 1 hard sided doggie crate, 1 soft sided doggie crate, one laptop backpack, one spunky doxy and my tired self and I opted to phone the car hire to get rates/reservation. I’ll drive to Northern VA as truly the thought of checking bags again and buying the ticket for Picollo plus going through this paperwork inspection was just not appealing. I hired a car, got it all packed, put in my address for the GPS and was off. Mind you at this point I’ve been traveling for 13 hours so I’m a bit loopy and I was blindly following my trusty tomtom GPS until I realized I was crossing a bridge and winding around by the Hudson River! Oh crap! I was heading for Manhattan. Oops! So here’s my tour of Manhattan…
Okey! The tour of Manhattan was old fast and I quickly proceeded to figure out how in the heck to get outta there and on the road to Brent’s in NoVA!
So I Decided To Try McDonald’s
Everytime I eat at McDonald’s I feel sick. It’s not so much with the other fast food restaurants but there’s something about McDonald’s I get a sick feeling from post consumption. All that aside I still do occasionally try it and try something different on the menu each time. I thought with all the Pulp Fiction hype of years past that I should eat french fries at McDonald’s with mayo so I am! Not too bad but I prefer the Dutch fries for sure!
Perhaps I’ll complement the meal and watch Fast Food Nation or Food, Inc.? Either will warn me off from fast food or beef for several weeks at least!
Dutch Sunset
I have either been riding or working and haven’t taken much time to enjoy the sunsets here in The Netherlands. I was working by a window this afternoon and happened to notice the pretty site. Here’s a Dutch sunset!
Beautiful Arena!!!
This is one of the most beautiful arenas I’ve seen. I just love the efficient roof!
This is the outside of the arena lined with lovely trees and hanging baskets. Even in the fall in The Netherlands it looks pretty!
